First-ever mass wedding, vow renewal ceremony in Carrollton

Publicado: 2016-02-16

Valentine's Day is all about celebrating the person you love.

And this year, more than a dozen North Texas couples did that in a big way.

They said, "I do."

It wasn't your traditional wedding ceremony.

But for one couple, it was the perfect setting for their journey.

For Manda Cavender, every step down the aisle was a reminder of how many it took to get there.

“We were walking down a road of destruction,” said Manda, with tears in her eyes.

It took nine years to finally walk down the aisle.

“There have been a lot of ups and downs, a lot of rollercoaster rides,” said Casey Cavender.

Casey and Manda Cavender and had planned to get married years ago - but called it off - three months before the big day.

This time was different.

It wasn’t your average wedding ceremony.

Manda and Casey tied the knot alongside six other couples.

It's part of a mass wedding and vow renewal ceremony - the first of its kind for Covenant Church in Carrollton.

“It’s really incredible for the community of our church to celebrate with them. Like, how many have ever had 2,000 people at their wedding, right?,” said Associate Founding Pastor Stephen Hayes.

It cuts down on cost, too. The service was free.

Professional photography and cupcakes were also provided, free of charge. It was a big incentive at a time when the average wedding can cost nearly $30,000.

More than 100 couples renewed their vows across Covenant's five campuses Sunday. Fourteen couples said "I do" for the first time.

But Manda saw just one person.

“I was standing on that stage with just Casey,” said Manda.

Along with their six-year-old daughter, Kya, the Cavenders are ready for the next steps together.

“I'm just happy to finally be a Cavender,” laughed Manda.

“It took a little, but that’s okay,” said Casey.

The couples worked hard to be a part of the ceremony, with weeks of pre-marital counseling to get them ready for a lifetime of "better or worse."

Pastors say the ceremony was so successful, they plan to continue the service for years to come.

“It took a lot of hard work, it took a lot of putting the right steps forth, and listening to God,” said Manda.
