Murdered Satmar Scumlord’s Daughter Marries, Satmar Rebbe Performs Wedding, Haredi news Website Honors Scumlord’s Memory

Publicado: 2015-12-23

Only days after New Yorkers were shocked to learn murdered Satmar scumlord Menachem “Max” Stark had built a Williamsburg, Brooklyn “luxury” apartment building that is so dangerous and unstable, New York City was forced to issue emergency vacate orders for all the tenants, Stark’s daughter Gitty got married.

Gitty is not at fault for what her father did, and the fact that she got married would not be news – except for two things.

First, the haredi website Matzav.com, which is closely linked to the English-language Yated Ne’eman haredi newspaper, reported on Gitty Stark’s wedding. It referred to her father as “Reb” – something only done for a person firmly inside the hasidic community in good standing – and wrotezecher l’bracha, may his memory be for blessing, after his name. It also praised Stark as a “beloved” member of the Williamsburg community.

Second, Matzav reported that Satmar Rebbe himself officiated at the wedding.

What Matzav did not report is who and what Stark allegedly was.

Stark allegedly ran lender real estate scams in which he and his partner allegedly declared bankruptcy, allowed development properties to appear to devalue, and then flipped the properties at steep discounts to shell companies owned by friends and relatives.

In the case of 120 South Fourth Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Stark apparently submitted plans for an entirely different building site to New York City’s Department of Buildings and may have bribed inspectors to expedite construction.

The building Stark built at 120 South Fourth Street reportedly has an extra floor not found in the plans, and building support beams in the basement ceiling are apparently improperly placed so there are no support posts underneath them, meaning the building could collapse – “pancake” in building safety parlance – at any moment. Tenants were charged many thousands of dollars per month in rent only to find their new apartments hadno gas, no appliances, and no interior walls.

Stark acted as the building’s owner and manager even though he had flipped the building to his brother-in-law Abraham Bernat during a bankruptcy in 2013 when the building was about half-complete, leading credence to claims the flipping of 120 South Fourth Street and other properties was a scam.

When Stark was murdered on January 1, 2014, Bernat took over day-to-day management of the building and allegedly continued Stark’s habit of mistreating and scamming his tenants.

Police trying to solve Stark’s murder initially had so many suspects they weren’t sure if they would ever be able to solve the crime because so many people wanted Stark dead. (Kendall Felix, contractor owed money by Stark allegedly killed Stark accidentally during a kidnapping which was meant to force Stark to pay up. Felix is in jail awaiting trial.)

The Satmar community and the wider hasidic and haredi communities have never distanced themselves from Stark or issued any statement condemning his alleged behavior and they vehemently lashed out at the New York Post for a cover that said, “Who Didn’t Want Him Dead?”.

But as the Matzav.com article shows, they have no problem praising him, even now.
