Milford man redefines ‘lost and found’ after find neighbor’s wedding ring

Win Smith says he's probably walked every neighborhood in town eight or nine times. And, on a Saturday stroll a couple of months ago, he made an interesting find in a pile of leaves.

“I reached down and picked it up and looked at it,” said Smith, an attorney from Milford. “It was all beat up and covered in mud.”

"It" referring to a man's wedding band, worth about $2,000. Several weeks ago he set out on a mission to find the owner.

Smith and his staff from his office created flyers, which simply said a gold ring was found near Burnt Plains Road and listed a phone number to call.

“I thought I gotta leave it kind of open ended because I don't want to tell them what it looks like, where I found it,” said Smith of why he was vague on the poster. “I want some information.”

After distributing some 150 flyers in the neighborhood in which he found the ring he received just one call.

“It just so happened that about several weeks before this, my husband had lost his wedding band, which he was devastated about,” said Sharon Jalbert-Fisk.

“I lost about 40 or 50 pounds and it just must've slipped off,” said Richie Fisk, who says it’s likely the ring fell off during a walk.

Mrs. Fisk called Smith and described the wedding band, which features a channel setting, perfectly. Still, Smith, a former state senator, wanted to throw her a curveball.

“I said to her ‘what does the inscription say?' And, she goes, ‘Oh, well, there is no inscription on our ring.’ I said, ‘OK you pass.’”

Smith was convinced it was Fisk’s ring when he Googled the couple’s address last week before delivering the ring. They live 100 feet from where it was found.

“I just grabbed it and took the box and ran down to my bedroom and then I put it in the drawer,” said Richie Fisk, who says he’s afraid of losing it again.

But then he allowed his wife to slip it on his ring finger.

“It's like being married all over again,” she said, after thanking Milford’s favorite ring bearer.
