Moody AFB groom gets deployed on wedding day

Publicado: 2015-10-17

Nearly 200 airmen said goodbye to their families Friday at Mood Air Force Base.

Members of the 824th Defense Base Squadron are being deployed to Southwest Asia.

Deployments are never easy, but imagine saying goodbye to your newlywed on your wedding day.

"It's kind of crummy by we'll get through it it's just one of those things," said Airman Justin Gatti. "It's part of the job."

Friday was Justin and Heather Gatti's wedding day and even though his new wife is also military, that doesn't make the good bye any easier.

"It's still overwhelming," said Heather Gatti. "It's scary because I've never been on this side; I've always reached out for support. I've never been the support."

The new Mrs. Gatti said she hoping she can use some of her experience on the other side to help her.

"I think maybe it will help to know what he might be looking for as far as support," said Heather. "Not knowing how to be there is what's going to be the hard part."

Though it's his sixth deployment, Gatti said saying goodbye to a wife and a daughter this time changes things.

"It's a lot different, there's a lot more impact to it," said Justin Gatti. "I don't know how to explain that either, it's just something you can't put words on."

Even though Gatti's mother has been there for previous deployments, with Friday also being his wedding day, it's made it a bit more emotional.

"I'm just very proud of him and I'm glad that he has support, more support than he's ever had before," said Linda Gatti. "I mean we can love him but he's got more people to love him now and I'm very happy for him."

She calls the military her family's lifestyle. She was raised in a military home. She raised her kids in a military home. And now they are doing the same.

"It's who we are it's what we do," said Linda Gatti. "It's the life we live."

Gatti's younger sister, Ashley Coomes, who is also an air force wife, had some advice for her new sister in law.

"Let people help you and let people love you through it and support each other," said Coomes.

Coomes said it's hard for the ones who are left behind, no matter how many times you say goodbye.

"I don't think it gets easier I just think you kinda learn to adapt and overcome," said Coomes.

This deployment is scheduled to last six months.
